Message from BEP's Executive Director

Welcome to The Butterfly Effect Project!

In 2014, I saw something in my daughter that stopped me in my tracks. She wasn’t a bully — but she was beginning to treat other children as if they were invisible. She had access to opportunities, support, and resources that I worked hard to give her — the very things I lacked growing up. But in giving her everything I didn’t have, I realized I had forgotten to teach her one thing I always needed: empathy.

She was in a program at the time that encouraged leadership and excellence — but only for those who, in their eyes, were already “good candidates.” Children who didn’t have the right clothes, or couldn’t consistently attend, or lacked transportation, were passed over. Not because they didn’t want to be there — but because they couldn’t be there in the same way. And instead of being embraced with compassion and inclusion, they were quietly dismissed.

I watched not just my daughter, but an entire group of young girls begin to reflect that mindset — politely, subtly, but powerfully. That realization broke something open in me. The mother in me — and the little girl I once was — knew I had to do more.

I started The Butterfly Effect Project to create a space where every child, regardless of their circumstances, would be seen, included, and uplifted. Where leadership didn’t depend on what you had — but who you are. What began as one mother’s mission to shift a mindset now serves over 700 youth across the East End of Long Island — girls and boys — helping them lead, connect, and fly.

If you’re here, something is stirring in you too. Let’s help spread some wings — together.

Thank you.

I joined The Butterfly Effect Project as a board member because I fundamentally believe that the potential of our youth must be nurtured and cared for far beyond the limits of what the current system provides. This essential program is a powerful force, giving young people more than just a single option—it provides a crucial path for self-discovery and teaches them how to care for themselves emotionally. This is especially vital for those who may not yet realize the full range of possibilities and choices they have to shape their own future.

My wife Ina and I were introduced to Tia and The Butterfly Effect project and were deeply connected to the issue of supporting children while they are developing; that's the time one can change lives.  We have met many Butterflies and have seen first hand how effective the support has been and are committing to help as best we can to expand the reach within our East End community.

I’ve always wanted to help young people- especially young women - discover their potential, identify their goals, and succeed in achieving them. Tia has founded an organization whose mission is to do just that!  I feel lucky - and honored - to be able to participate in helping The Butterfly Effect Project fulfill its mission.

Inequality can only be changed by giving the next generation the necessary tools to overcome the economic and social barriers they face.

The Butterfly Effect Project directly and powerfully addresses these barriers by providing programs, to hundreds of young girls and boys across the east end, designed to promote confidence and develop the skills necessary to achieve their dreams.

How could I not want to be a part of that effort?
